VMware to open R&D office in Dublin, Ireland

Some really good news for those of us working for VMware and based here in Ireland. VMware Research and Development are opening a new facility in Dublin. Dublin will also become a location for developing operational expertise focusing on VMware managed data services to forge the multi-cloud platform of the future. Yesterday, our CTO Kit Colbert was in Ireland for the announcement. Really enjoyed meeting with Minister @mmcgrathtd and Victoria Mackechnie (Irish Development Authority) as we officially announced our intention to set up an engineering office and hub here in Dublin, focused on building out our core Cross-Cloud SaaS Platform!…

Celebrating 20,000 #vSAN Customers – Thank you

Wow – more than 20,000 vSAN customers. What an amazing journey it has been. If you haven’t seen it, vSAN license bookings grew over 50% year-over-year in Q1 with a total customer count growing to over 20,000 (seekingalpha.com). Now we need to keep the pace and, as Duncan put it, remain the number 1 player in the hyperconverged and hybrid cloud world! As a sort of thank you to everyone who helped make this happen,  Duncan and I have decided to lower the price of our vSAN Deep Dive book for 1 week. So, until Friday, June 7th, we have…

Catch me at Cisco Live EMEA 2017 – Berlin

Later on this month, I will be attending my first Cisco Live event. This year, it is taking place in Berlin, Germany. As part of the event, I have the opportunity to deliver a 20 minute presentation on vSAN. The session is titled “Architectural Overview of HCI powered by VMware”. Many of you will already be aware that vSAN is currently VMware’s fastest growing product. In this session, I will give an architectural overview of vSAN. The hope is to teach some of the basic principles behind vSAN, as well as many of its features. I will also talk about…

The continued rise of HCI, and especially vSAN

This morning, twitter is alive with VMware’s Q4 2016 results. In a nutshell, its been a phenomenal quarter. Of course, the first thing I wanted to check out was how vSAN did. “Outstanding” is the word. At VMworld 2016 in Barcelona, we were somewhere around 5,500 vSAN customers. Today, that number stands at 7,000. In the space of a year we have more than doubled the number of vSAN customers globally. There is no doubt about it, but Hyper-Convergence is hot. The recent acquisition of SimpliVity by HPE demonstrates this. [Update] As does NetApp’s intention of getting into the HCI…

See you at VMworld 2016

I’m thrilled to have had a session accepted at this year’s VMworld. I’m also going to be a co-speaker on another session. As you might have guessed, both presentations are on Virtual SAN (VSAN), and I am co-presenting both sessions with my buddy Paudie O’Riordan. In the first session, we will be talking about how to conduct a successful proof of concept (PoC) on VSAN, which will cover how to prepare, how to test, and what gotchas you need to be aware of when going through a PoC with VSAN. This session, STO7535, will take place on Wednesday, September 1st…
