Monitoring and Metrics in VMware Data Services Manager v1.4

VMware Data Services Manager (DSM) v1.4 has a substantial amount of built-in monitoring, not just for analyzing the health and behaviour of the vSphere environments where the databases are running, but also the databases themselves. In this post, I will highlight what those metrics are, and where to find them in the Provider UI. We will begin by looking at the ‘Environment’ monitoring and metrics, before turning our attention to the ‘Database’. Environment The first interesting view of an environment is the Health. This view shows us the health of the agent, and whether any of the major components that…

Announcing vSphere CSI driver v2.5 metrics for Prometheus monitoring

This post will look at another new feature that has been added to the vSphere CSI driver v2.5. This feature enables the exposing of CSI metrics so that they can be collected by Prometheus and stored as time series data. Using the information captured in Prometheus, we can build Grafana dashboards which makes is easy to monitor the health and stability of the CSI driver. Kudos to one of our vSphere CSI driver engineers, Liping Xue, who did a great write-up on how to test this feature, and who’s content I relied on heavily to create this post. In the…

WaveFront Collector Issues: Error in scraping containers

I was very pleased last week, as I managed to get a bunch of metrics sent from my Kubernetes cluster into Wavefront by chaining proxies together. I was successfully able to see my cluster’s Kube-state Metrics and Kubernetes Collector Metrics in Wavefront. However, on closer inspection, I noticed that a number of the built-in Wavefront Kubernetes dashboards were not being populated (Kubernetes Metrics and Kubernetes Metrics by Namespace), and then I found a number of errors in the Wavefront collector logs in my deployment. This post will describe what these errors were, and how I rectified them. There were 2…
