One of the most common issues I got questions about in VSAN 5.5 was “why is VSAN deploying thick disks, when all of the documentation stated that VSAN deploys thin disks”? The answer was quite straight forward, and was due to the fact that the VMs were being deployed without a VM Storage Policy. This meant that it went through the standard VM deployment wizard which offered administrators the option of thin, lazy-zeroed thick (LZT) and eager-zeroed thick (EZT). I was having some discussions recently on the community forums about Virtual SAN behaviour when a VM storage policy is changed on-the-fly. This is a really nice feature of Virtual SAN whereby requirements related to availability and performance can be changed dynamically without impacting the running virtual machine. I wrote about it in the blog post here. However there are some important considerations to take into account when changing a policy on the fly like this.
I thought it might be useful to share some of the various VM Storage Policy status that I have observed whilst testing Virtual SAN (VSAN). I’m sure this is by no means a complete list but as I said, these are the ones that I have come across and I am sure these are the status that you will observe most often too.
