New Aria Operations True Visibility Management Pack Releases

I have been using Aria Operations and True Visibility Management Packs quite a bit recently. This is mostly to get visibility into databases that are being provisioned by VMware Data Services Manager (DSM). I just learnt that we released a bunch of new Management Packs (v9.1) only last week, including updated Management Packs for both PostgreSQL and MySQL. In this post, I will deploy a new PostgreSQL database via Data Services Manager (DSM) 2.0, add the necessary database configuration options and extensions, and then add the database to Aria Operations True Visibility for PostgreSQL databases for monitoring. You might ask…

Aria Operations Integration with VMware Data Services Manager v1.5 (Video)

This is another short video showing the main steps to configure Aria Operations (formerly vRealize Operations) to monitor databases provisioned via VMware Data Services Manager (DSM). Note that there is a requirement to install True Insight Management Packs for PostgreSQL (and MySQL) with Aria Operations. Thus, there may be a licensing cost associated with this. However, if you are already using Aria Operations as your single pane of glass for monitoring all of your vSphere Infrastructure, then there may be benefits to using the same mechanism to monitor your databases. The purpose here is to demonstrate that provisioning databases via…

Aria Operations for Logs integration with VMware Data Services Manager v1.4

In my most recent post on VMware Data Services Manager (DSM), we saw how it was possible to integrate the PostgreSQL databases – which are deployed by VMware DSM – with Aria Operations. In this post, we will see how it is also possible to integrate the logs generated by these deployments into Aria Operations for Logs, formerly known as vRealize Log Insight. Let’s begin the post by once again sharing the versions of the various products that we will be using to do the setup. VMware vRealize® Operations™, Version: 8.10.2 (21178503), Edition: Enterprise vRealize True Visibility Management Pack for…

Aria Operations integration with VMware Data Services Manager v1.4

This is a post to address a query that I recently received  regarding the use of Aria Operations (formerly vRealize Operations) with VMware Data Services Manager. The question was whether or not the vRealize True Visibility Suite for PostgreSQL and MySQL would work with the databases that are provisioned by DSM. tl;dr The answer is yes, the True Visibility management packs will successfully gather metrics from databases deployed via DSM, and allow you to build monitoring dashboards, etc. In this post, I will demonstrate the steps involved in configuring the integration for PostgreSQL as there are a few specific steps…

Getting started with VCF Part 5 – Commission Hosts

At this stage, we’ve done quite a number of tasks related to VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF). Our management domain is up and running, and we also have the vRealize Suite of products deployed (vRealize Suite Lifecycle Manager, vRealize Log Insight, vRealize Operations Manager, and of course vRealize Automation). Our next step is to commission some new ESXi hosts so we can create our very first VI Workload Domain (WLD) which we can start using for production purposes. This post will look at the steps involved in commissioning the hosts. Note that in this example, I am going to commission ESXi…

Getting started with VCF Part 2 – vRealize Suite

Following on from my first post on getting started with VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF), the next thing that you will probably want to do is configure the vRealize Suite in SDDC Manager. Now, as part of the initial VCF deployment, vRealize Login Insight is already deployed.  Therefore in this step, we will deploy two components – the vRealize Suite Lifecycle Manager and vRealize Operations. There are two pieces of information that we will need before we start. The first of these is the ‘Bill of Materials’ to tell us which versions of software are required for our particular release of…

Introducing Project Magna – Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for vSphere self-driving operations

At VMworld 2018, Pat Gelsinger made reference to a project that was looking to use Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to create self driving operations for the vSphere stack. At VMworld 2019 last week, we were given a tech preview of the first iteration of this effort, called Project Magna. There were a number of VMworld break-out sessions dedicated to this effort, and I will reference them near the end of this post. However, this first tech preview is focused solely on hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI), namely vSAN. It is an interesting choice to start with, since we position vSAN as…
