A closer look at Bull Storage Solutions

I thought it was about time that I looked at some of the larger storage vendors closer to home. One of these is of course Bull. This company is probably more familiar to those of us based in Europe rather than those of you based in the Americas or Asia Pacific. However VMware customers in EMEA will have seen them in the Solutions Exchange at VMworld Europe, where they have a reasonably large presence. After some conversation with my good pal Didier Pironet, whom I’ve met at a couple of recent VMUGs, I was introduced to Philippe Reynier who is…

A closer look at Fusion-io ioControl 3.0

Last week I had the opportunity to catch up with Mike Koponen and Dean Steadman of Fusion-io. I had met with Mike and Dean at VMworld 2013, and spoke to them about the Fusion-io acquisition of NexGen storage earlier last year, and what plans Fusion-io had for this acquisition. Well, the result is ioControl Hybrid Storage, and we discussed some of the architecture of ioControl as well as a number of vSphere integration points.

vSphere 5.5 Storage Enhancements Part 5: VR/ SvMotion/SDRS Interop

I wrote about this issue on the vSphere blog some time back. Essentially, the issue described in that post was if a VM that was being replicated via vSphere Replication was migrated to another datastore, it triggered a full resync because the persistent state files (psf) which tracks the changes were deleted. All of the disks contents are then reread and check-summed on each side. This can have a significant impact on vSphere Replication’s RPO (Recovery Point Objective).

VAAI & VASA for Oracle Storage

A short note to let you know about some interesting news for Oracle/VMware customers. Oracle has just announced that it has  licensed a number of VMware vSphere Storage APIs, including VMware vSphere API for Array Integration (VAAI), VMware vSphere API for Storage Awareness (VASA) and VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager (SRM). As per the Oracle press release, “Support for these APIs will help simplify VMware customer access to the higher levels of performance and efficiency available with ZFS Storage Appliance and Pillar Axiom storage systems.” Read the full press release from Oracle here.
